Chapter 8

The Escape

After a few days of searching for anything to break the chains, Tim finally found a steel pin that fallen loose from a horse harness near a wagon. In his cabin, he worked on the pin each night using rocks, sharp edges of different metals, even the bricks of the slave cabin fireplace to form the pin to cut metal. After a week of making sharp jagged edges on the pin, he successfully got it to cut into the metal of his ankle chain.

The next day, he planned to carry it to the fields to start cutting his shackles under the cover of the water paddy. To his surprise, he was ordered to the main house kitchen to move a heavy China cabinet that displayed unused plates and utensils. He knew he would be searched afterwards, and threw the pin in the back of the locked barred cage as he walked past it. Now he had to find a way of getting back into the cage without getting bull-whipped.

Two days later, after walking toward the rice paddies after lunch, Tim made sure a black overseer saw him sneaking away. He walked to the back of the main plantation house and thought about picking flowers which was not allowed. He noticed the beautiful Miss Jenkins laundry hanging on a clothes line, drying in the wind. Assured that he was being watched, he grabbed the nearest panties and began sniffing the crotch as if it was his last breath. He could smell the residue of piss and cum as the black overseer ran up to him.

“You freaky…mother…fucker!” he yelled while drawing his pistol. “You’re lucky Master Jenkins didn’t catch you sniffing his underwear.” Tim started to choke. “You just bought yourself two days in the cage.” Tim then coughed in disgust while smiling internally, almost throwing up all of his lunch.

Those couldn’t have been Master Jenkins. Thought Tim. Unless he’s a cross-dressing drummer boy?

The angry overseer escorted him to the steel barred jail cell and locked him in. After searching at the rear of the cage, Tim found the jagged pin lying in the right corner. He started right away, sawing away the metal only when nobody was around.

At the end of his two day incarceration, he cut into his connected ankle chain just enough for it to be broken by a large rock. Before he was let out, he slipped the pin to his escape partners like a San Quinton inmate, and advised them he was leaving in two days. That gave them enough time to saw their ankle shackles.

At the end of dinner the next day, Tim saved a small portion of his steak from his plate. There was a newly arrived, sixteen year old Norwegian slave girl named Darlene who sat two tables across from him, noticing he was stashing food.

Later, she approached him as all the white slaves were heading to their cabins before the curfew.

“I know what you’re doing?” she said walking next to Tim.

“What are you talking about?”

“You better take me with you…or I’m gonna tell a foreman.
